About Sickle Cell
SCD (ickle cell disease) is one of several inherited red cell disorders. Red blood cells are made up of hemoglobin, which is a protein that carries oxygen. Healthy red blood cells are round and move through small blood vessels to transport oxygen to all parts. SCD is caused by abnormal hemoglobin. This causes red blood cells to become sticky and hard, and can look like a C-shaped farm tool, called a “sickle”. The sickle cells also die young, which results in a constant shortage.
Sickle Cell Symptoms
Anemia. Sickle cells can easily break down and die.
Pain episodes. Periodic episodes in extreme pain (called pain crises) are a sign of sickle cell disease.
Swelling in the feet and hands
Delayed puberty or growth
Sickle Cell Treatment
Although stem cell transplants or bone marrow transplants can cure sickle cell disease, they are not recommended very often due to the high risks. Bone marrow is a soft tissue that can be found at the center of bones and which produces special stem cells. They can be transformed into many types of blood cells.
